In China and Vietnam, more than 11,000 bears are enduring daily torture, and living in horrible conditions — in tiny cages in captivity. Locals are using them to harvest their bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, used by some traditional medicine practitioners. To supply “bear bile farms,” bears are caught from the wild with snares (spring-loaded steel traps). They’re forced into tiny cages where they are starved, dehydrated and mutilated so that bile can be extracted. Some bears suffer like this for 30 years. Some are simply left to starve to death in their cages.
Animals Asia is working toward ending bear bile farming by 2022 through focusing on key areas: operating sanctuaries where rescued bears are rehabilitated and cared for, reducing demand for bear bile, monitoring the changing trends in the trade of bear bile and parts, engaging with the traditional medicine community and other users of bile to promote herbal and synthetic alternative. GreaterGood.org and Animals Asia have teamed up to help these rescued bears get the care they need with your help!
Animals Asia Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to end the farming of bears for bile in Vietnam and China, provide sanctuary for bears, end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, and ensure humane treatment of dogs and cats.
