Pay a Nurse Midwife’s Salary for a Week
Help provide grassroots, on-the-ground healthcare in a remote, impoverished region of western Nepal.
Nurse midwives are at the heart of the public health response to maternal and infant mortality. They provide preventive medicine during pregnancies, ensure safe deliveries, identify danger signs for emergency referrals, and follow up on the care of mothers and newborns. Yet in far western Nepal, where a civil war and severe poverty has left the healthcare system in ruins, trained nurse midwives are unavailable for most citizens. As a result, only one in 100 deliveries is conducted by a trained healthcare provider. This lack is deadly: a woman in these areas has nearly a 3% chance of dying as a result of pregnancy-related complications.
Nyaya Health, a medical relief organization working in the far western district of Achham, is changing this dire scenario. Helping to pay the salary of one of Nyaya Health’s nurse midwives will both save lives immediately and will help to build the long-term healthcare infrastructure that Achham so greatly needs.
This Gift That Gives More™ pays a nurse midwife in Nepal for one week.

In its April 2009 report, Nyaya Health writes: “On behalf of Nyaya Health, we wanted to thank you for your continued support this year, and provide you with the first 2009 Update.
“On April 6th of this year Nyaya reached its one-year anniversary in providing clinical services to the Achham region in western Nepal! Prior to Nyaya’s arrival, there was no allopathic doctor in an area of over 250,000 people. We now have a medical center where we provide free care for about 100 patients per day, with a full outpatient department, 24-hour emergency and obstetric services, mobile community health worker follow up, a laboratory and free pharmacy, and the only ultrasound service in the region.
“More recently, Nyaya reached a second milestone on April 20th, the Nepali Ministry of Health and Population approved our proposal to renovate and open Bayalpata Hospital previously abandoned and very near to our current clinic. All of this has been made possible through your continued support!
“Nyaya is a completely volunteer-run organization with 100% of donations going directly to medical care and service delivery in Nepal. Your continued support has been absolutely critical during this past year, and as we enter year 2, we are honored to be taking on these new challenges.
Best wishes
Ryan, for the Nyaya Health team”
